”Whispers of the Approaching Wastefulness” is Italy’s New Risen Throne’s take on the gradual decay and disappearance of societies and civilisations… and this masterful and atmospheric dark ambient sound-painting will accompany the funeral cortege of that of the 21st century’s. Haunting swathes and washes of mournful voices and chantings borne on cold winds, darkly overcast skies always threatening acid rain, distant scratchings of industrial decay, metal structures collapsing in on themselves, cities once vibrant now just bare forests of ruptured stone, broken glass & twisted steel, rats (both human and animal) scurrying around furtively and secretively on a quest for survival, unable (or unwilling) to comprehend that the end has already arrived, prophets demanding repentance, and over all, the grim bony hand of the reaper waiting to claim the dregs inhabiting the places whose names have been forgotten. This is a dismal soundscape for a dismal end, the inevitability of which most humans are blissfully (and deliberately) ignorant, with no warmth or comfort, the fires that burn are the fires of destruction and conflagration, searing away the last vestiges of hope in men’s hearts – I found myself shivering at the profoundly cold nature of our demise portrayed here and just hope that when it arrives, as surely it must, my body will have long returned to the dust of the earth…. doomy dark ambience at its deepest, darkest and most profound and dare I say it, most hauntingly beautiful – recommended

Just a little over two years ago I reviewed New Risen Throne’s split with Cruel Harvest and asked this question; “why isn’t this band signed to a label like Cold Meat or Cyclic Law, and getting much more exposure in the dark ambient scene?” Perhaps my ESP abilities were working well back then, because the latest recording from New Risen Throne is indeed on Cyclic Law Records, and hopefully this also means more exposure for this spectacular dark ambient musician from Italy. When talking about Dark Ambient music few are quite as ominous and frightening sounding as Stielth’s New Risen Throne. Slow brooding synths, distant voices speaking, whispering, and chanting in some unknown tongue, unusual metallic sounds, occasional industrial vibes, and just a complete feeling of pure fear is what you can expect when listening to ‘Whispers of the Approaching Wastefulness.’ What these whispers are telling me I can’t say, but indeed it sounds like something very bad or evil is on the horizon as you voyage through these forty four minutes of music. Alongside these six menacing compositions is also a bonus music video, which is of similar high quality. In the video you can see a dimly lit cave or possibly a forsaken village with candles burning as well as some surreal imagery. Of course the song that goes with the video is outstanding as well. Basically when it comes to New Risen Throne your going to be experiencing some of the finest dark ambient music available and frankly if you have any interest in this sort of music I’d say your absolutely required to check out this astonishing record.

J’ai déjà abordé les œuvres de Stielh lors de précédents articles. J’ai toujours été séduit par l’univers extrêmement sombre dans lequel il nous invite. Rarement formation de Dark Ambiant n’avait créé de « musique » aussi sombre ! Et pourtant, nous n’étions pas encore à l’époque de « Whispers of the Approaching Wastefulness »… En effet, si les précédents opus excellaient dans le domaine du Dark Ambiant apocalyptique de par leur ambiance funéraire, ritualiste, minimaliste mais assez travaillée pour toucher directement là où ça fait mal, « Whispers (…) » est loin au dessus d’eux tant au niveau purement musical qu’au niveau des émotions qu’il suscite. Au niveau musical, c’est un grand changement car chaque titre se démarque de son « voisin » : on peut assez aisément les différencier sans que cela ne nuise à la linéarité de l’album (avouez que c’est rare !) et les ambiances qui s’en dégagent sont pour la plupart tellement glaçantes qu’on se croirait sur la banquise, même en cette période de grosse chaleur (sans parler de la pollution ! C’est un autre sujet…) La plus grande nouveauté, c’est surtout les chœurs. On entend toujours des voix prises de je-ne-sais-où, mais c’était déjà le cas dans les précédents albums. Cela dit, si l’on prend celles de « Prophet III », on a de quoi parler de vrai progrès dans l’horreur ! Les personnes à lourd passé psychiatrique reconnaîtront les ambiances de nos chers centres (de soins) fermés. Les autres n’auront qu’à imaginer. Cela ne devrait pas être trop difficile… Le reste n’est que pur Dark Ambiant ne pouvant être créé que par un esprit soit réellement tourmenté, soit d’un génie sans égal pour toucher l’âme de ses auditeurs. Bon. Sans m’emporter d’avantage, jusqu’ici au niveau du Dark Ambiant à passer pour abréger une soirée ennuyeuse avec des gens chiants, je n’avais pas beaucoup de références. Les disques vraiment angoissants se font rares et la dernière perle dans le genre c’était l’album de Trist, « Tiefenrausch ». A présent on peut faire varier les plaisirs sadiques et les peurs refoulées de nos chers « amis » car « Whispers (…) » remplit très bien ce rôle de… d’invitation à s’enfermer ou à se replier sur soi. J’avais déjà énormément d’estime pour Stielh pour ses albums précédents, mais là autant dire qu’il bat tous les records… Chapeau aux rares artistes dont il fait partie qui arrivent encore à me faire ressentir toutes ces choses venues d’ailleurs !

Uno degli aspetti della musica di New Risen Throne che ricordo mi colpì fin da quando ebbi occasione di ascoltare i suoi primi CD-R, fu che mi apparve subito evidente come, pur facendo riferimento ad un'area musicale, la dark-ambient, piuttosto vasta e "ingombra" di produzioni di tanti artisti che spesso non riescono a distinguersi dalla "massa" e ad emergere esprimendo in qualche modo una riconoscibile "impronta stilistica", un proprio sound e una propria "personalità", New Risen Throne invece, all'opposto, risultò immediatamente in grado di caratterizzare in modo molto marcato la propria proposta musicale, rendendola assolutamente originale, riconoscibile, personale, nonchè, occorre ovviamente sottolinearlo, anche estremamente valida dal punto di vista della qualità artistica. Ascoltato un CD di New Risen Throne, non sarà praticamente più possibile confondere il suo stile, e quindi un suo CD, con lo stile o il CD di un altro qualsiasi artista ascrivibile alla medesima area musicale, e questo mi convinse fin dai miei primi ascolti a sostenere con convinzione il progetto New Risen Throne, certo che nel giro di poco tempo si sarebbe aperto "prepotentemente" un varco nel pur affollato panorama della musica dark-ambient. Così effettivamente è stato. Qualche autoproduzione, alcuni lavori pubblicati su CD-R per piccole etichette del settore, e nel giro di pochissimi anni l'approdo in "casa" di etichette più note e prestigiose come la God is Myth, Eibon (in questo caso in collaborazione con Subinterior attraverso il progetto Konau) e Cyclic Law, imponendosi, a conferma delle mie previsioni, come uno dei più validi e interessanti progetti in area dark-ambient del panorama internazionale. Se dal punto di vista prettamente stilistico nulla o quasi è cambiato rispetto a quel tipo di atmosfere oscure, tetre e talvolta quasi "lugubri" che New Risen Throne aveva in qualche modo già messo a punto e "fissato" fin dalla sue prime releases, certamente sono stati invece evidenti i progressi dal punto di vista tecnico per quanto riguarda la qualità del suono, unitamente ad una progressiva e parallela "crescita" per quanto riguarda la capacità di scegliere e trattare i suoni, stratificarli, assemblarli, miscelarli, dar loro una forma più articolata e complessa dal punto di vista della composizione, delle dinamiche, dei "tempi", delle progressioni... Tornando al CD oggetto di recensione, sicuramente uno dei lavori più rappresentativi e consigliati per quanto riguarda la produzione di New Risen Throne, inizia con un brano imponente, drammatico e dalla cadenza quasi "marziale", il fantastico "Signs of the Approaching Wastefulness (I)". Fondi oscuri, rumori metallici distanti e cadenzati, bassi pulsanti, voci umane corali sprofondate ed echi di altre voci trattate recitanti probabilmente oscuri rituali costituiscono gli "ingredienti" del successivo, sempre splendido, "Blowing Funeral Chant". Suoni e atmosfere tutto sommato abbastanza simili anche in "Signs of the Approaching Wastefulness (II)", dove però i fondi "corali" sono stati sostituiti da melodiche e discrete sequenze di pads di synth. Più lugubre, inquietante e onirico "Prophet III", brano in cui, su fondi sempre oscuri e a base di drones, si sovrappongono la voce enfatica e inneggiante, "deformata" e sostanzialmente trattata con delay, del "profeta", e pesanti movimenti ritmici/meccanici circolari in loop. Straordinari, nel seguente e sempre molto oscuro "Aporrheton", i suggestivi incantesimi evocati attraverso le inaspettate parti di flauto riverberato suonate da Amanda Votta. Conclude il CD (ma per i più curiosi segnalo in realtà la presenza di un'ulteriore traccia, di tipo video, fruibile attraverso PC) il brano "Signs of the Approaching Wastefulness (III)", ancora costruito con drones, evocative e lugubri parti corali, bassi pulsanti, tenui passaggi melodici a base di synth.
