Reissue of Troum's debut album from 1998, comes in nice digipak.
"Troum is the next step evolution of Maeror Tri, taking the highly
processed guitar ambiance of their previous venture and channeling
it through a more tumultuous, volatile outlet. “Riqis”
reverberates from the voracious maw of a wind tunnel; “Tocher”
opens in a similar vein, though its tones seem more subterranean,
struggling under the surface, before slipping through into a completely
different land, one littered with diamonds melted in the incinerator
heart of the earth; rising from the multi-layered drone of “Thumus,”
distraught impressions like grievous fingernail crescents dug into
the skin, at which point the layers grow even more voluminous, before
dissolving into dust-laden light particles; “Riurja” is
driven by a primitive beat, looped crumbling cliffs that are punctuated
with more thundercrack lightening slashing at the disintegrating ridge,
the stalking pace almost musical, melodic. The general feel of the
sounds here is reminiscent of the earth moving, tectonic plates in
constant shuffle, the tracks building and then either shifting or
worn away via attrition. It‘s as if Maeror Tri learned to fly
through ingenuity, smoke and mirrors, while Troum has taken the ingenuity,
smoke and mirrors and, somehow, grown wings. Amazing stuff!"

TROUM teams up with the legendary British singer / songwriter and
EYELESS IN GAZA-member MARTYN BATES. More than 2 years in the making,
MARTYN BATES has sung & played (mouth organ & melodica) over
basic material TROUM provided – consisting of harmonic minimal
loops & basic song structures derived from accordeon, e-bass &
guitar, percussion), who were then also responsible for the final
subsequent additions mastering (adding more guitar-work, voices &
balalaika). MARTYN BATES has chosen to sing four poems of the famous
Irish poet W.B.YEATS, and he did this with a most impressive sensitivity
for TROUM'S very sublime & rather hidden harmonic structures.
There are also two instrumentals in a more experimental style on this
disc, one being a dark drone reprise of the main piece “MAD
AS THE MIST AND SNOW #2”. MARTYN’s voice is surely not
something for everyone – it’s of an extreme emotional
& yearnful quality that might be not easy to stand – a yearning
which is like a deep “cry out to the horizon”, to something
that is unreachable per se, feeling a passion that tears you apart
inside. This is pure emotional poetry transformed into yearnful audible
spherics !

'There is a big gap between “rational”, verbal language
and the pre-symbolic language of our emotional and unconscious mind.
Music is perceived partly with our conscious mind, who can analyze
it and reflect on it. On another part, it is perceived by our unconsciousness,
by our “primal consciousness” that lies “under”
the rational mind. The idea: Experimental music, especially that of
a more droning character, can easier “get in touch” or
be unconsciously connected with this primal state of mind. It is music
that is linked with unconscious fantasies coming from a pre-verbal
sphere of existence... the phase of life based on the dyadic interaction
with the “primal object”, the mother. At this early stage,
there’s no awareness existing of being a full separated Subject,
and no other full separated Objects can be perceived. Inner and outer
reality is the same. Spheric, droning, dissolving music is pointing
unconsciously at this “objectless” sphere of existence.
This release is dedicated to the idea of an especially formed “pre-symbolic”

"Symballein" is the second Troum release on the Small Voices
label after "Autopoiesis" LP picture disc. This album is
a collection of very rare material, from the very beginning of Troum
(period: 1997 - 1999). As Troum meaning the music is dreamy... The
concept of the ‘Dream’ is the common thread running through
Troum; the name, the music and the philosophy. For not only is Troum
the old German word for "dream" but, according to their
website, ‘the dream, seen as a central manifestation of the
unconscious, symbolizes the aim of Troum to lead the listener into
a hypnotizing dream-state of mind, a pre-verbal and primal consciousness
sphere. Troum uses music as the direct path to the Unconscious, pointing
